'Remember' is a piece for counter tenor or soprano and piano that sets a poem by Christina Rossetti of the same title. In the poem, someone who has passed away seeks to comfort their loved one who is mourning them in their absence. As such, a sense of bittersweet reminiscence and inner conflict is felt throughout the work as the one who has passed away wishes for their beloved to be happy even if it means moving on and forgetting them. Musically, the ‘remember’ motif, introduced by the vocalist’s opening four notes, outlines an F major inverted triad, which is woven throughout the entire piece in both the vocal and piano lines. Text: Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you plann'd: Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad.
