PONDOLAND produced by: FRFM studios Shot over 5 days in the Mdumbi region of the Transkei; the wild coastal land originally known as Pondoland, this is one surfers escape from the material, a journey back to the source. Ricky Basnett finds himself led on this pilgrimage by numerous guides, both ancient and animal. The majesty of the environment and the wonder of the journey is revealed in dances and light, winding us through the three chapters of this short film. Told in the Xhosa tongue and cut to local music, the visuals explore the ever-changing moods of Pondoland; dark, humourous, savage in its beauty, and always, ever, African. Reflecting his internal journey, Ricky Bobby unmasks exactly why he takes to the water as he does; to jol*, to connect, to be at one.
