Milton “Shapp” Shapiro was born in 1912 in Cleveland. He formed Jerrold Electronics in 1948 initially to manufacture at-home TV set boosters, but the company eventually began building its own cable television systems. Jerrold became an empire and would go on to develop a system in Williamsport that became the largest cable system in the country. Shapp eventually lost control of the company, however, after becoming deeply involved in politics and losing the general election for Pennsylvania governor in 1966. He ran again in 1970 and served two terms, soon becoming the first Pennsylvania governor to succeed himself in nearly 100 years. Shapp died in 1994 in Philadelphia, and although was known not to have been very good at being a big shot, he was remembered as a visionary and a never-say-die champion of underdogs in politics and elsewhere. PCN’s celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Cable Television recognizes Pennsylvania’s deep connection to the founders of cable television. 75th Anniversary programs will air every Sunday in October starting at 8:00PM with an encore the following Thursday starting at 7:00PM. Watch on cable in PA or stream on demand with PCN Select.
