September 18th, 1956, Elvis took simple photo outside Bill's Grocery Store Memphis—last day before Ed Sullivan Show that would make him most famous person in America, writing on back "last day nobody knew my name, last day I was just me, last happy day" then hiding photo in wooden box for 20 years. August 14th, 1977, two days before death, Elvis found photo at 2 AM unable to sleep, adding new words: "I was wrong, it wasn't my last happy day, it was my last REAL day, everything after this was performance, even when I was alone, especially when I was alone." Elvis placed photo under his pillow that night, where it was discovered August 16th after his death, with staff member reading both messages realizing Elvis spent 21 years mourning lost authentic self. Vernon showed photo to Priscilla during funeral preparations explaining "he came home so happy that evening September 18th, I thought there'd be thousands more days like that, but there weren't, there was only that one," with photo now displayed at Graceland as testament to price of fame: losing yourself to performance, authenticity becoming impossible, real person dying day fame was born.
