A detailed look at how the front of a steam locomotive is opened/closed and the components used to make this happen. This door allows access to the smokebox that is below the chimney at the front of the boiler. This loco is named 257 Squadron to commemorate its participation in the Battle of Britain in World War 2 in1940. It was sent to the scrapyard in 1964 despite being only 16 years old!! It sat there for 19 years before it was rescued from the cutters torch and restored to running condition by us at Southern Locomotives Limited. We are a friendly NOT-FOR-PROFIT railway group that restores, overhauls and maintains heritage steam locomotives and mainly relies on volunteers and supporters to fund its restorations.
