MI CASA ES TU CASA — A large crowd gathered for an “inclusion potluck” dinner following the Spanish worship service Sunday afternoon at First United Methodist Church in Fort Atkinson. Members of Pastor Modesto Soto’s Hispanic congregation and of the Unity Project, a nonpartisan group intended to make sure that people of all nationalities feel safe and welcome in Fort Atkinson, sponsored the event. The goal of the gathering was to bring people together to show solidarity and support for the Hispanic community and beyond. Another goal was to melt the language and cultural differences that sometimes lead to stereotypes, which in turn can lead to judgmental attitudes. An estimated 150 people shared a great variety of food, as well as music provided by Joan Rodriguez. Several bilingual community members served as table hosts to help bridge the language barriers so that the Fort Atkinson neighbors could better get to know each other. A highlight was when two young “niños” were introduced to God in a touching ceremony, capped by Pastor Soto’s kiss of blessing. The Unity Project is an apolitical group dedicated to helping Fort Atkinson continue to be a healthy community that welcomes and supports all cultures.
