London, 1998. After a traditionally anticlimactic wrestling tournament, featuring the usual byes, this happened. Most of the crowd were ECW fanboys who were hoping Sabu and RVD would meet in the final (they were in opposite sides of the draw). Cue byes however and the second semi suddenly ended up being the final. After the match, Sabu and RVD run in and attack both wrestlers. Kovac & Hermann make the save and a random match ensues. Despite the heelish act by the ECW team they were, of course, the fan favourites. EC-Dub! EC-Dub! I enjoyed ECW at the time. In fact it rekindled a dwindling interest in wrestling, but with hindsight it spoilt wrestling a bit going forward. Despite efforts by a few indie promotions worldwide, most fans these days want a type of action which is very difficult to suspend your disbelief over. (Two men headbutting each other in the face over and over again on top of a ladder at wrestlemania anyone? Not even a bruise?) One blown high spot after another does not tell a story. Mind you, the idea that the old timers all had great psychology and storytelling is nonsense. I was watching an old Rock N' Roll Express match the other day, and after Morton had, as usual, spend most of the bout selling, he makes the hot tag, crawling over to his partner like a thirsty man in the desert. In comes Gibson like a house on fire (you've seen this before, right?), drawing his opponents partner into the ring for a two on one. So back comes Morton to even it up. Now HE'S a house on fire too, despite looking half dead just 20 seconds ago! What's that got to do with this match? None of your business.
