Two prominent Brazilian politicians and academics unpick the social, economic, and political dynamics that led to the victory of the far-right candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, in the 2018 Brazilian presidential elections. First speaker: Professor Cristovam Buarque who served as the governor of Brazil’s Federal District (1995-1998), a Senator from 2003 to 2019. Initially a member of the Workers Party, in 2005 he joined the Popular Socialist Party (Partido Popular Socialista, PPS). Cristovam is the author of over 30 books. His most recent work is entitled ‘How the Left Elected the Right in Brazil’, and examines the how Jair Bolsonaro rose to power after the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff. Second speaker: Professor Maurício Rands, who served three terms as a Congressman in Brazil’s Lower House of Congress, the Chamber of Deputies (2003-2012). In 2008, he was chosen as the leader of the Workers’ Party (the PT, Partido dos Trabalhadores) in the Chamber of Deputies. He is currently Professor of Law at the Federal University of Pernambuco.
