Which Is Best For Off-roading: Automatic Or Manual? | Harry Situations

Automatic or manual is a debate as old as gas versus diesel or mud-terrain versus all-terrain tires. The days of manual transmissions providing more gears and better fuel economy are gone in the era of efficient eight- and ten-speed automatics where 4x4s have more gears than cylinders. But that doesn’t mean the mighty manual is dead. There are still advantages to a manual transmission on the trail, and fortunately the three most popular 4x4 platforms (the Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Tacoma, and Ford Bronco) are still offered with manual transmissions. A manual transmission with deep gearing can handle even the most technical of terrain, although often times you must find the right gear for the given situation. It is true that automatics, with the torque converter providing gear multiplication, can somewhat make up for the lack of low gearing. The trade-off to this is that slipping torque converters produce an enormous amount of heat, and heat kills parts.
