As part of the symposium, “Whither American Social Work in Its Second Century?” professors Lorraine Gutierrez and Larry Gant, both of the University of Michigan school of social work, discuss the place of community practice in American social work, focusing on its roots and foundations, current status and trends, and future challenges and directions. Michael Reisch, the Daniel Thursz Distinguished Professor of Social Justice at the University of Maryland, responds by reflecting on the historic tension between the drive to professionalization and engagement with social and political activism in community organization that persists today, and identifies contemporary challenges to those in community practice. The video ends with a discussion with the audience. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/UCHICAGOytSubscribe About #UChicago: Since its founding in 1890, the University of Chicago has been a destination for rigorous inquiry and field-defining research.
