"Skater Wannabe" Devon Drake and Adam Carswell, 2025 NC Folk Festival Not Your Average Folk Contest

"Skater Wannabe is my entry for the 2026 Not So Average Folk Song Contest. My song, "Skater Wannabe," is a Generation X "set-her-free" love story. Skateboarders were nuisances in the 1980s suburban communities. They were known for their language, clothing style, and congregating in abandoned parking lots. They were kids from all socio-economic backgrounds. But to each other, they were equals. Some wanted for nothing, and some had to go without. John and Kate connect as young kids during the summer (when the days never end). He only skates enough to get close to Kate. They use words like "punk-ass and broke-ass" to be cool and fit in. Skate shoe brands were Converse and Vans. Kate never realizes how hard John's home life is. He was hassled by the cops because he was a latchkey kid with a single mom. John pushes Kate away because she has opportunities, but he only has burdens. He doesn't want her anchored. She learns to be self-reliant and follow her heart.
