#milazzo #castellodimilazzo. #sicily The Castle of Milazzo, located at the beginning of the peninsula that ends with Cape Milazzo, overhangs the old historical “borgo” of Milazzo, while the new town lies in front of the harbor. The monumental complex, known also as the “Walled City”, is the widest fortified citadel in Sicily. It covers an aerea of 7 hectares and was a defensive bulwark over the north coast of Sicily. Its origin is lost in the mists of time. The first fortifications can be dated 4000 BC. The Greeks transformed the site in an important settlement erecting the Acropolis on the higher part of the town. After them, the Romans built the “Castrum” starting the story of the Castle. The oldest part of the actual fortress is Arabian, the “Torre Saracena”, while the main buildings are from Normans and Swabians. The two wall systems are from Aragones, the oldest, and Spaniards, the widest and external. Austro-Hungarians, Piedmontes and English Armies used the Castle in XVIII and XIX centuries. The end of its story is as Italian Royal Prisons till 1970. Inside the fortress you can admire the ancient cathedral, palazzo dei Giurati (the ancient city hall), the old Duomo and the Mastio, the nucleus of the fortification, with the Arab Tower, the prison and many other ruins from different eras. But, a part from its war history (several battles were fought around the castle during its millennial life), and the monumental interest, the stunning view from the top of its ramparts is unforgettable and deserves itself the visit. The peninsula extends northward as a finger in the Mediterranean Sea. The seven Aeolian Islands seem so near you could touch them. East and west side the northern coast of Sicily and, southward, the town of Milazzo with its harbor, the slopes of Nebrodi and, in a clear day, the worrying shape of Etna volcano under the horizon. To visit the Castle you have to buy a ticket at the entrance. The monument opens at 9 in the morning till 6:30 PM. If I could suggest you a visiting time, choose the hours before sunset for the best photographic light. Don’t forget to visit the ancient village too, a typical example of traditional Sicilian civil architecture. You can easy overnight in Milazzo. The modern town offers all kind of accommodations, full of restaurants and a nice seafront. This is a 4k film as I filmed it entirely with a GoPro Hero 7. The outside photo of the Fortress is by Francesca Sparatore. For Post-production and editing, I used I-Movie.
