This is my homage to the Rune Eihwaz and also to nature and the primordial elements. Winter is frosty harsh and beautiful, specifically because of these characteristics is both dangerous and a very inspiring and special season. I spend a lot of time in the forest every year, either to gather firewood, to strenghten my spirit or just to gather my thoughts and find peace. There is no feeling like beeing alone in the deep woods, while the snow is falling all around you and all you can hear is the echo of your own breath and the surrounding enviroment. Birds, trees, the snowy ground and the pale sky above and no one else. I could not wish for better! This is Eihwaz. With many roots and branches like Yggdrasill and evergreen like the Yew tree. Both strong and resilient as a megalith. The rawness of nature in its purest of forms! The rawness of the self in its many incarnations. Alternative Names of the rune: Anglo-Friesian/Germanic: Ihwaz Norse (Viking): Eihwaz Old English: Eeoh Other Names/Spellings: Eihwas, Eihwaz, Eo, Erwaz, Ezck, Ihwar, Ihwas, Iwar, Iwaz, Yr Eihwaz, the thirteenth rune of the Elder Futhark, is one of the most powerful runes called for protection by the masters of runes. It represents the yew (Taxus baccata), the tree of the life and death. The hook geometrical shape symbolizes the union of the two worlds. The verdent Yew tree stands tall in a snowy field. All around it is the still lifelessness of winter, yet the Yew remains supple and strong. Yews are hardy trees which stay green even in winter. Their red berries signify life in the harshest of environments -- a steadfast refusal to succumb to the opposition and hardship of the cold. Yew trees have been linked to runes, the occult, and rites of passage in Europe since ancient Germanic times. Historically, the wood of the yew tree also made the best bows, at one time a vital and sophisticated instrument of war -- used to kill the enemy at long range before they could draw close. Eihwaz also symbolizes the reversals, the questionings and the upheavals. After Jera's cycles, Eihwaz signals a break in the rhythm of things to reach another level of experience. Thus Eihwaz represents a passageway to another reality with new perceptions, quite as death is a passageway to this other reality. Eihwaz is the axis all around of which Jera turns because to die is the end of a life but also the beginning of the other. Eihwaz should not be feared, because it also means continuity and endurance. The best longbows were always made from yew trees. As well as being strong, long-lasting, and flexible, they contained protective magic. Thus, Ihwaz also represents safety from attack and a weapon of defence. See more here: http://norse-mythology.org/runes/the-... The footage is from the forest of my hometown in Veliko Tarnovo.
