Hike inside IJEN VOLCANO: sulfur blue light and nature of East Java, Indonesia

After arriving in Surabaya from Singapore, it took us 7-8 hours to get to Banyuwangi Town at the eastern side of Ijen Volcano. Hike at the Ijen base camp starts at 1:45 AM, so you would probably need to wake up at 11:30 PM for overnight hike to see the sulfur blue light before stunning sunrise. I would still suggest to depart from Bondowoso Town on the west, since it's closer to the base camp. Be prepared for the challenging hike! It take at least 1 hour to get to the top, another 1 hour to descend to the caldera to witness sulfur mining with a blue light, and another 1 hour to ascend back to the top, where you can have your breakfast and rest. Followed by another 1 hour walk back to the base camp. Temperatures during autumn/spring are as low as 15°C (59°F) at the base camp and 9°C (48°F) at the top. You definitely need a tour guide, which can be arranged by your hotel in any major town in East Java and Bali or even at the base camp at night.
