(23 Mar 2020) Streets in Berlin and Frankfurt were deserted on Monday, after Germany's federal government imposed a ban on public gatherings of over two people to curb the spread of the new coronavirus. On Sunday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced far-reaching nationwide measures to ensure social distancing. In public, people are allowed to move about either alone, with people from their own household, or with a maximum of one other person, while keeping at distance of at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) from one another. The agreement across Germany's 16 states and federal government ended a patchwork of different rules that had caused confusion among the country's 83 million population. Germany has recorded over 26,000 cases of COVID-19 alongside 111 deaths, and on Monday cautiously reported some flattening of its infection curve. For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia but the vast majority of people recover from the virus. The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 349,000 people and killed over 15,300 people worldwide. More than 100,100 people have recovered so far, mostly in China.
