Timișoara (Latin: Timisvaria; in Hungarian Temesvár; in German Temeschwar, alternatively Temeschburg or Temeswar; in Serbian Темишвар, with Latin alphabet: Temišvar; in Turkish Temeşvar) is the capital city of Timiș County, Banat, Romania. It is located in western Romania, close to the borders with Hungary and Serbia, on the bank of the Bega River. The name of the locality comes from that of the Timiş river, combined with the Hungarian noun vár, "fortress", meaning the Timiş Fortress. Located on the Bega River, Timișoara is the largest and most important city of the historical region of Banat. From 1848 to 1860 it was the capital of Serbian Vojvodina and The Banat of Timisoara. After World War I, Timișoara became part of Romania. In 1989, the city was the hotbed of the Romanian Revolution, which removed the communist regime from government.
