On February 11, 2012, Beth had a very rare liver tumor that ruptured, killing her son. She overcame insurmountable odds to survive, let alone return to a normal daily life. She needed the help of others, including family, friends, community members, students, faculty members, and administrators to overcome these horrific events. All of their support and compassion during this dark time created a positive “Ripple Effect.” It is because of this support, she was able to survive this terrible tragedy. Beth’s son has touched the lives of others since his passing in 2012. His legacy has created a “Ripple Effect.” Her son’s sacrifice has motivated Beth to try and do something positive each day and continue to be a positive role model for her students, because life is not always fair. Beth Fochtman is a Baldwin Graduate and has been a Family & Consumer Science Teacher for 15 years in the Baldwin Whitehall School District. She graduated from Mercyhurst College with a Bachelor of Arts in Nutrition/Hotel Restaurant Institutional Management in 1999 and a Bachelor of Sciences in Family & Consumer Sciences Education in 2001. During her time at Baldwin, Beth has coached both men’s and women’s tennis, as well as chaperoned several trips and dances. Her greatest joy is being married to her husband Rich (a fellow Baldwin teacher) and being the mother of two amazing children. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
