Production and trade are among the fundamental drivers of economic growth in a globalized economy. But one critical aspect stands out: the link between production and pollution. Kenya exported $4.5 billion worth of manufactured goods in 2020, and this production, which is mainly destined for foreign markets, has a significant environmental impact in the country. Analysis by the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Protection (SMEP) programme shows the importance of the food and beverage sector to the country. It is highly diverse and one of the main drivers of economic growth, formal job creation and revenue for the country. Kenya's most exported product in this category is palm oil, which leads to environmental pressures at the source, including deforestation and land use. Most crude palm oil is imported into Kenya for further processing, which requires large amounts of energy and water and generates large amounts of waste (often toxic). The SMEP programme is helping Kenya identify and adopt solutions to reduce pollution, such as technologies, policies or platform solutions. The goal is to help the country promote sustainable production and trade. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3lobX67
