Who makes the white line paint that keeps 4 million miles of highways safe? I called the Georgia Department of Transportation and they sent me to the Armstrong Smith Paint Company in East Point, Georgia. They had specialized in traffic paint for 25 years. Armstrong Smith manufactures highway paint for 40 states. It seems that states are picky about their paint. Each one has different specifications and formulas. One thing they all agree on is every mile of yellow and white lines must be precisely the same color. It seems that highway paint plays an important role in highway safety. I asked how many miles of white and yellow lines there are in the U.S. As they say, it’s complicated. There aren’t any exact statistics for the total length of traffic striping on all the roadways. But … there are over 82,000 miles of county roads, 19,000 miles of state highways, and 14,000 miles of city streets. The total length of all roadways in the US is about 4 million miles … and every one has highway lines. Armstrong Smith makes the paint and someone has paint to those long yellow lines.
