We decided to have some fun on Friday, putting a Shapeoko 5 Pro and an 80mm VFD spindle to the test. A 1/2" endmill isn't something you'd normally use for cutting aluminum on a CNC router (1/4" to 3/8" is more of the sweet spot), we thought it'd be interesting to see if we could get the 1/2" endmill to dance. If you ever wondered "Does a Shapeoko really have enough power for me?," this one's for you. Here's the technical details of the machine, toolpath, and settings we used here. Note, we did not push the machine or spindle to failure. We had even more performance on tap, but opted for these settings because the cut sounded pretty good.
