One of these tornadoes between the towns of Clear Lake and Gary, South Dakota would last for over 45 minutes and morphed through many different shapes and sizes before unfortunately striking a farmstead. This is the story of how my chase partner @highriskchris and I documented this historic event and tried to get our 360 cam probe inside of a tornado. The greatest tornado we've ever seen. Further notes about the destroyed farmstead and why we didn't stop: Everyone in the farmstead was sheltering in the basement when the tornado struck and thankfully survived with only one minor injury being reported. Regarding why we didn't stop, in the heat of the moment Chris and I were in shock of what we just witnessed. We were distracted by this along with trying to document the event for a few critical seconds after the house was hit and didn't notice the driveway until after we had already past it. There's a moment just after where you can hear Chris react and pan the camera back when he notices what we think might be the driveway after we've driven past it but at that point it was already too late. We considered turning around on the road to go back but with all the traffic on the road and people driving erratically due to the still ongoing tornado, we decided it wasn't worth the risk and pulled over for a moment to reevaluate and film. Once we saw there were already other storm chasers (including our friends @StormChaserAaronRigsby and @tornadotrx ) and law enforcement on scene, we decided to continue the chase as neither of us have any medical training and couldn't offer anything of value to the victims with professional help already on scene and would most likely just be in the way. It was an unfortunate set of circumstances and I wish we would have noticed the driveway in time to help.
