An automatic tensile test on adhesives and plastics provides a good basis for showing the change in the mechanical properties of a polymer after aging, heat or media storage or after weathering. For this purpose, the characteristic values of the tensile test are determined in the freshly molded state, as well as after defined aging or weathering times. In the standardized tensile test, test results are presented in relation to a defined pull-off speed on the specimen. In practical use of a component or structure, however, the stresses that occur can lie in a very wide range of deformation speeds. Due to the viscoelastic property of the adhesives and plastics, different mechanical properties normally result under changed strain rates than were measured on a standardized specimen. For this reason, the characteristic values determined in the automated tensile test are only of limited use for component design, but they do provide a very reliable basis for comparing materials.
