Edward's age is beginning to show due to some of his worn-out parts, causing him to make clanking sounds. One bright and sunny day, Edward has to pull some cattle cars to a market town; the cars are making a lot of noise, as is he by this point. Near the line is a field where some cows are grazing, and the cows become annoyed by the noise and smoke produced by the engine as they are not used to it. As Edward passes by, a number of cows break the fence, run across the line and lunge into the train, break a coupling and causing the last cattle car and the brake van to be left behind. Believing the jerk to be the cars getting up to mischief, Edward continues on his journey. It is not until Edward gets to the yards that he or his driver realized what has happened. Gordon and Henry hear about the incident and find it very funny, leading them to tease Edward about letting a few cows damage his train while bragging that they could handle cows easily. This makes Edward very angry and Toby is also indignant towards the big engines as he knows they have never encountered cows so don't understand the trouble they cause. A few days later, Edward is still in a bad mood and it only grows worse when Gordon sails through Wellsworth with the express, still teasing him. Gordon continues down the line, telling the coaches to hurry until he and his driver think they see something on the upcoming bridge. As Gordon gets closer, his driver applies the brakes and shuts off steam as the obstacle turns out to be a cow. Gordon tries to shoo it away, but the cow refuses to budge due to her loneliness about the fact that her calf has disappeared. Gordon's crew and the passengers try to get the cow to leave, but to no avail. Soon, Henry comes into view with his train and also thinks that the cow can simply be ordered away, but is also unable to get her to move and he nervously reverses so as to not hurt her. Once back to the station, Henry's conductor tells the stationmaster about the cow and warns the signalman about the obstruction blocking the line. The porter realizes that the cow must be Bluebell and that her missing calf is at the station. The porter decides to send the calf in a truck pulled by Percy, who passes Henry at Crosby on the way. At the bridge, Bluebell is very pleased to have her calf back and the two cows are then led away by the porter. Gordon and Henry make an agreement not to tell anyone about the incident, but the story quickly gets around. That night, Edward teases Gordon and Henry in the shed, having heard the story himself. Gordon defends himself and Henry, claiming that they simply refused to hurt Bluebell by running up against themselves. Edward tells Gordon that he understands, making Gordon worried that Edward does understand all too well.
