First Scholar Xu is unaware that Second Scholar Cai is actually his love in male disguise. He is desperate when he learns that Lord Cai has promised Maiden Cai's hand to the new Second Scholar. But Second Scholar Cai (Maiden Cai in male disguise) teases and tests First Scholar Xu's love for her. First Scholar Xu professes his undying love for Maiden Cai - much to the secret joy of Second Scholar Cai. Female xiaosheng 何惠丽 portrays Scholar Xu, and huadan 朱俊 portrays the fair Maiden Cai. The elegant and gentle Yueju 越剧 is a relatively young genre (it has a history of only a 100 years old!) of Chinese opera. There are no male performers; all male roles are performed by females, which gives this genre a gentle characteristic. The music is soft, with no loud percurssion element, and performers sing with a lilting style.. .
