Public health focuses on improving and protecting the health of populations through education, policy-making, research, and prevention efforts. Public health differs from individual healthcare by aiming to address broad social, environmental, and economic factors that can influence health and health outcomes. Such factors include socioeconomic status, education, physical environment (including housing), employment, social support networks, access to quality healthcare, and nutritious food. Evidence suggests that limited access to these factors can contribute to health inequities, result in suboptimal health outcomes, and can lead to chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and mental health issues. This presentation is an introduction to public health and discusses how barriers to care, access,s and quality can impact health outcomes and create health disparities among communities. We will discuss how these disparities often affect marginalized groups differently. The presentation will outline how equitable and equal whole person/whole community health is crucial to reducing health disparities; and consider the full spectrum of factors that affect an individual’s health which include physical, mental, emotional, and social needs. We will acknowledge that health is not just about treating disease but the whole person, and when proposing whole person/whole community heath it is essential to fortify the social determinants of health (SDOH) to ensure access to the resources that promote well-being in all areas of life.
