Polls suggest Rao's Centrist Congress Party will be defeated - with the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party - or B-J-P - gaining the majority of votes. While the rest of India was focusing on the first day of voting in the country's general elections, Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was already thinking about the next phase of voting. Rao was lobbying for votes in West Bengal - a state run by marxists. Thousands turned up to listen to the prime minister as he rallied the voters.
