The WDR BIG BAND feat. the two Chick Corea pieces "Spain / La Fiesta" on bass John Goldsby, on trombone Andy Hunter, on piano Billy Test as well as Johan Hörlén on alto saxophone, Karolina Strassmayer on flute and Ruud Breuls on trumpet. Conducting in the concert is former principal conductor Michael Abene, who also wrote the arrangements. Recorded on October 9, 2021 at the WDR Funkhaus / Cologne. On February 09, 2021, the keyboardist and composer Chick Corea passed away. With him, the jazz world has lost one of the greats. Born in Massachusetts, Corea began his career in the 1960s. He gained great attention when he contributed to the groundbreaking Miles Davis album "Bitches Brew." In the 1970s, Corea enjoyed great commercial success with his fusion band "Return To Forever." Repeatedly switching between acoustic and electric lineups, Corea played almost exclusively his own compositions, many of which have since become standards. In honor of this great musician, the WDR Big Band, under the direction of Michael Abene, has conceived a program of Corea's works that primarily reflects the keyboardist's acoustic side.
