"Pious ecclesiastical and school songs of the ancient bishops" or Piae Cantiones for short, is a collection of late medieval songs in Latin and Swedish first published in 1582. The work was compiled in Finland by the Lutheran priest and Wittenberg alumnus Jacobus Finno. The origin of the songs and melodies varies. Many originate from Central Europe but quite a few seem to have been written in the Nordic countries. The work was translated into English during the 19th century and played an important role in the prolonged effort to reconstruct a Christian folk culture in England after the ravages of Cromwell and the Puritans. Many English Christmas carols have their origin in Piae Cantiones, including 'Christ Was Born on Christmas Day' and 'Good Christian Men, Rejoice'. "Våren kommer till vår fröjd" or Tempus adest floridum (The time of flowers has come) is often sung at Saint Walpurgis Night (Valborg) in Sweden and Finland (30th of April). Saint Walpurgis Night is celebrated in many parts of Northern Europe, by people of various Christian traditions and denominations, Lutheran, RC, secularized etc - all united in being fed up with winter. The last image shows the great Walpurgis Night bonfire in Uppsala, Sweden.
