2025 Terry Lectures-Give Without Getting: Philosophical Critique of Ritual in China, India, & Greece

This second of three lectures focuses on texts from three cultures: the Confucian classic Xunzi, the Bhagavad Gita, and a debate between two late ancient Platonists, Porphyry and Iamblichus. Adamson points to a common theme found in these historically unrelated works, namely the idea that sacrifice and ritual more generally should not be carried out in hopes of reward.
