"Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, the new president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), spoke to VOI World. AAPI represents 120,000 physicians, residents, and fellows of Indian origin and is the largest ethnic medical organization in the US and the second largest medical organization after the American Medical Association. 23% of international medical graduates in the US are from India and make a huge contribution to the health workforce in the country. Besides a high level of skills and knowledge, the Indian and Indian origin doctors in the US bring with them a culture of compassion and respect for patients and are very well-respected. AAPI is working with AMA, which now has a president of Indian origin for the first time in history, to improve the lobbying power and political clout of doctors of Indian origin in Washington, D.C. Earlier this year, AAPI lobbied with the US government and the US Embassy in Delhi to get faster visa interview dates for resident doctors from India who were planning to go to the US to join residencies on J1 visas AAPI is also lobbying for Indian doctors in the US who are on H-1B visas and stuck in very long green card queues."
