Dr. Miranda: I’ve done hundreds of Mako robotic surgeries, mostly unique components on the orthoplastics and the hip orthoplastics. Mako assisted robotic hip replacement surgery is based off of a preoperative CT scan that the patient gets before surgery. This is inputted into their software program and develops a computer-generated bone model of the patient's anatomy of their hip. We then look at this plan and preoperatively determine where the implant will be placed and the size specific for each patient. During the procedure, the robotic-assisted arm helps the placement of the acetabular component to the precise position that it was determined preoperatively. My interest in robotic surgery stems from the development of technology and joint replacement surgery specifically at the knee. The reason I like the robotic surgery in the Mako System is because the accuracy and the precision of the (01:00) robot helps provide during the procedure leads to better implant placement and overall longevity and function of the patient’s joint that is replaced.
