"Big Spender " was written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields for the 1966 musical “Sweet Charity”. Shirley Bassey’s original recording appeared on her 1967 studio album “And We Were Lovers”. She has performed the song in most of her live concerts ever since. The first time I heard Shirley Bassey's voice (minus “Goldfinger”) I was at a Gay pub in Greenwich, London. I didn't know who she was. I thought that she sounded a bit like an amalgamation of Dinah Washington, Lena Horne, Eartha Kitt and Nancy Wilson. The song playing was "As Long As He Needs Me". I asked my friend "who's this?" and he looked at me like I live in a cave and said "Shirley Bassey!!!" I've been listening to her ever since. She has had an opera vocal coach for a number of years now and it probably explains how she is still hitting and holding those big notes, and had an enduring vocal consistency over 55 years in the business.
