Some songs start as hits but end up as punchlines. Over-saturation, endless mocking, and viral internet culture can transform a former chart-topper into a pop culture punching bag. Today, we're counting down 6 tracks and artists that went from beloved… to the butt of the joke. We’ve got stories like the time Conan O'Brien teased Michael Bolton. So Bolton threatened to end Conan's life by sending a softball through his head at their next charity softball game. Or how about when the star of Titanic, the highest-grossing film of the 20th century, said that movie’s theme song My Heart Will Go On makes her throw up in her mouth every time she hears it… because fans won’t stop playing it for her! And then there’s the music journalist who was locked inside a listening booth at a Best Buy, and was forced to listen to We Built This City his magazine called “the worst ever”… for 24 hours straight. Plus, there’s What's Up, the song that is so annoying I'd rather be water boarded then list to it. We’re covering the rock era’s best musical punchlines. Click the bell, also make sure to grab your vintage year shirt… Let’s count down those classic hits that have become punchlines. So kicking things off at #6, I’ve got Europe with The Final Countdown. This Swedish heavy rock outfit traces its origins back to 1978, but found their own version of rock immortality when they released The Final Countdown in 1986. The apocalyptic track hit #1 in the UK and #8 in the US. The song went multi-platinum, but in the process, it would set a standard so high, the band would never be able to match it. Of course, Europe would have other hits, especially in the UK and on their home turf in Sweden… and even here in the US, where Rock the Night went to #30, Carrie reached #3, and Superstitious went to #31… But most everyone thinks they are a one-hit wonder… In fact, I’ve seen numerous countdowns that rank the final countdown as one of the greatest one-hit wonders ever. But over the long haul, none of their other hits have stuck like The Final Countdown. That unforgettable synth riff became this universal cue that “a big moment is coming.” But here's the thing. The Final Countdown wasn't even written for radio of to be a song at all. Said Joey Tempest, "It was meant to be an opening for the live show. We were putting out our third album, and we wanted a really grand opening for the show. I'd had that riff tucked away in a drawer since my college years, and I took it out, found a tempo for it, wrote lyrics, and it turned out to be a great opening for that album and for the show as well.”When the conversation was started about the music being shaped into a song, it was met with resistance within the band. John Norum didn’t like the synth riff at first, feeling it was too pop for their metal sound. After Europe languished in the 90s, the band recycled The Final Countdown for the lead-up to the new millennium. Released as “The Final Countdown 2000” on December 7, 1999,
