I wanted to share something truly special: my dance, "I Still Love Chicago." This high-intermediate dance is set to a beautiful track by Ben Schuller. It tells the bittersweet story of a long-distance relationship that eventually fizzled, but focuses on holding onto the good memories, with no regrets. In writing this choreography, I designed it so that you emphasize the good times when you face forward, but mourn a bit when you look away. Listen to the lyrics closely: "I still love Chicago. I still love the snow. I still love the walk by the lake in the cold." As we hit the word "cold" I angle us towards the back wall embracing that first loss of being in the cold. "I know that it's through" We look towards the back wall on 'through' taking on that full feeling of loss, before turning back to the front to put on a brave face again. I have us move on "All this distance," turn around on "made us different" and we stay facing mostly the back after that. We dance the broken jazz box sequence to match the concept of "broken til we couldn't fix it." It ends with "Guess we're better off" as we triple step towards the back wall in acceptance, before making one final turn of hope to the front wall. Then we turn away one last time. It's ok though. We'll always still love Chicago.
