Dongri is a neighborhood located in the city of Mumbai, India. The history of Dongri dates back to the 17th century when the area was controlled by the Portuguese. The name "Dongri" is thought to have originated from the Portuguese word "dongre," which means "hill." During the British Raj, Dongri was primarily a working-class neighborhood, and it was home to a large population of East Indian Catholics, many of whom worked as fishermen, farmers, and manual laborers. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dongri began to attract a large number of migrants from other parts of India, many of whom were looking for work in the city's growing industries. During the 20th century, Dongri was densely populated, and the area underwent significant development as new buildings and infrastructure were constructed. It is also known for its narrow streets, chawls and kholis, and also for the Dongri Children's Home, which was established in 1911 to provide accommodation for orphaned and destitute children. Dawood Ibrahim is a notorious Indian organized crime figure who is believed to have grown up in the Dongri neighborhood of Mumbai. He was born in a Konkani Muslim family in 1955 and raised in the area. In the 1980s and 1990s, Ibrahim rose to power as a leader of the Mumbai underworld, and is alleged to have been involved in a wide range of criminal activities, including extortion, drug trafficking, and money laundering. He is also believed to have had ties to terrorist groups, and has been accused of masterminding the 1993 Bombay bombings, which killed over 250 people. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Ibrahim reportedly controlled much of the illegal activities in the city, including smuggling, extortion and real estate business. He was also alleged to have close ties to political figures and police officers, who provided him with protection and support. Ibrahim is currently a wanted criminal in India and is said to be hiding in Pakistan. Indian government has declared him as a global terrorist and have been putting pressure on the Government of Pakistan to hand him over.
