Robert Beverland was born on 1 July 1895 in Holywood and he was the eldest son of David and Rebecca Beverland (nee Carlisle) who were married on 3 May 1894 in St Mark’s Parish Church of Ireland Church Dundela. David Beverland, a widowed boot manufacturer from Belfast was a son of James Beverland, a shopkeeper. David Beverland had previously been married to Annie Maria Thompson Murray; they were married on 7 August 1883 in St John’s Church of Ireland Church Belfast. Annie Thompson Murray, who ‘ornamented linen’, was a daughter of James Murray, a carpenter (deceased). Annie Maria Thompson Beverland (nee Murray) died of congestion of the lungs on 8 February 1885 (aged 26) – twelve days after giving birth to a daughter on 27 January 1885. Her daughter died on 27 January 1885 having lived for just one hour. In civil records the child is unnamed. David and Annie Maria Thompson Beverland (nee Murray) had previously had a son, born on 15 February 1884 at 17 My Lady’s Road, Belfast. He too lived for just one hour and in civil records is unnamed. The Beverland family lived in Holywood, in Bellevue; in Kinnegar; at 5 Esplanade and at 6 Seaview Street. David Beverland was a boot manufacturer and a cousin of boot merchant Robert Beverland who was casualty Charles Ferris Beverland’s father. David Beverland (the boot manufacturer) had a factory on the Newtownards Road, Belfast and, at one time, Robert Beverland (the boot merchant) had three shops in Belfast. David and Rebecca Beverland (nee Carlisle) had six children: Robert (born 1 July 1895 in Bellevue, Holywood) Jane Carlisle (Jeannie, born 28 November 1897 in Kinnegar, Holywood) David (born 3 July 1899 in Kinnegar, Holywood) Margaret Ferris (born 22 July 1901 in Kinnegar, Holywood; died of tuberculosis 11 August 1907 at 4 Esplanade, Holywood) Bessie Byers (born 26 May 1905 in Kinnegar, Holywood) A new member of the family has been interred here since this video was made. Rebecca (born 17 August 1907 in Seaview Terrace, Holywood) Robert Beverland enlisted in Holywood and served with the 13th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles in 108th Brigade of the 36th (Ulster) Division. Sergeant Robert Beverland (No. 17262) was killed in action on 1 July 1916, his 21st birthday – the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
