Captured before the Great Earthquake of March 25, 2025. These images remain so the memory does not fade. U Min Thonze Pagoda (Thirty Caves Pagoda) is another pagoda on the top of the Sagaing Hill, besides Soon U Ponya Shin pagoda and Sagaing Buddha Cave. We can translate the term “U Min Thonze” into “30 Caves Pagoda”. It was ordered to construct by revered monk Padugyi Thangayaza during the 11th century. There are 45 Buddha images seated in a semicircular colonnade, their hands in the “calling earth to witness” mudra. The U Min Thonze Pagoda, famous for its crescent-shaped colonnade and 45 gilded Buddha statues, was one of the most severely impacted sites on Sagaing Hill during the March 2025 earthquake. Large cracks opened in the hillside rock and the man-made terrace, raising fears that the entire "cave" structure could slide down the slope. Because U Min Thonze is built directly into the side of the hill, it was particularly vulnerable to the intense ground acceleration of the 7.7 magnitude quake. As of 2026, it remains high on the list for UNESCO-supported emergency stabilization, though the ongoing conflict in the region has slowed the arrival of international restoration experts.
