Original listing and sheet music here: https://musescore.com/user/36482158/s... "A Rag Time Rhapsody". This ragtime rhapsody is very interesting for a couple of reasons. First is the year it was published, 1898, when ragtime was still new and emerging as a genre (Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" wasn't published until the following year, 1899). Early ragtime scores were often creative in their presentation, as the ragtime experiment slowly evolved. Second, this score was written by a seasoned musician who was already established as "the John Phillip Sousa of Columbus", a respected bandleader, musician and composer. Fred L. Neddermeyer (1866-1924) was born and spent most of his life in Columbus, Ohio. He was the leading bandmaster of Columbus from the 1890s until his death in 1924. He was musically eclectic enough to compose a ragtime piece, but he was also the same bandmaster who conducted a series of popular concerts in Memorial Hall in Columbus which, according to Neddermeyer himself, was “the first real effort to turn the musical thoughts of Columbus from ragtime to classical music, and it proved successful.” Photos and bio of Frederick L.
