Exploring the historic heartlands of the Chiltern Hills, the Royal Chilterns Way is a spectacular new off-road bikepacking adventure from Cycling UK, blending scenic trails, ancient hillforts, chalk-cut artworks and royal landmarks to showcase the very best the Chilterns have to offer. This 174-mile (280km) route, with around 18,000 feet (5,500 metres) of climbing, is approximately 65% off-road, following bridleways, byways and forest tracks linked by quiet country lanes. Divided into three interconnecting loops, Southern, Central and Northern, it offers plenty of flexibility for shorter trips or a full long-distance challenge. Starting in the riverside town of Reading, the journey traces a thousand years of royal connections, from the site of King Henry I’s grand abbey to the county that gave its name to Buckingham Palace. Along the way riders pass through charming towns and villages, including Henley-on-Thames, home to the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta, and encounter landscapes shaped by centuries of history and tradition.
