(16 Oct 2013) The Croatian President Ivo Josipovic travelled to Belgrade on Wednesday, where he held talks with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and top Serbian officials. This is the first official meeting between the two leaders since Nikolic was elected in May 2012. Josipovic was welcomed by an honour guard, before heading into meetings with Nikolic in Serbia Palace. At a joint news conference with Josipovic, the Serbian president said relations between the two nations had "gained a new dimension". "It is concerned primarily with establishing a permanent dialogue and active cooperation in solving many open questions that burden or used to burden both countries," Nikolic added. Nikolic said, however, that Croatia has "decided not to withdraw its genocide lawsuit (against Serbia), even though Serbia showed willingness to withdraw a counter suit". Croatia filed a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice in 1999, accusing Serbia of genocide, during Croatia's war for independence from the former Yugoslavia in the early '90s. Serbia filed a similar suit thereafter. Over the past couple of years Croatia has considered withdrawing the lawsuit. Josipovic said on Tuesday that a "fundamental problem" facing the two nations was the issue of missing persons from the brutal war of the early '90s. The Croatian leader said that finding a solution to this problem is "a precondition to a final and complete normalisation of relations between our two countries". Ahead of the news conference, representatives from Zagreb and Belgrade universities signed an agreement of cooperation.
