Documentary about Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. This series will be divided into multiple episodes, with this first one focusing on the band's first single, 'Sebastian'. What was it all about? Had it something to do with Oscar Wilde? Central song in this episode: Sebastian, from the album The Human Menagerie (1973). Sebastian was Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel's first single. Steve Harley himself never really revealed what the mythical, epic and, above all, grotesque song was about. He usually pointed to the frequent lsd use at the time or said it was a "gothic love song". And the latter seems to be true, if you take a deep dive into the mysterious, dark lyrics. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was a Irish writer who was persecuted for his homosexual activities in the UK after violent troubles. After his two-year imprisonment, he left for Paris, where he spent the last three years of his life. It was a very shabby exile in Paris, where he eventually succumbed to meningitis at the age of 46. In 1891, Wilde met Lord Alfred Douglas, a son of the Marquis of Queensberry. The two men fell in love with each other, despite the fact that Wilde was married. Douglas' father wanted to end this relationship and it was because of this that all the court troubles arose. During his imprisonment, Wilde wrote a long letter to Douglas, which, however, was only published after his death under the title De Profundis. In France, things went very badly for Oscar Wilde, who was also very angry with Lord Alfred Douglas. The conviction deprived Wilde of more than his freedom and his wife. He went bankrupt, was deprived of parental rights over his two children and lost the copyrights to his work. His imprisonment had also caused his health to deteriorate. Today, Wilde is seen as an advocate of the gay scene. Before all the misery began, he and Douglas explored the gay-sex underworld of late Victorian London. In De Profundis, however, it becomes clear that Wilde also has a nasty side to Douglas. He turns out to be beautiful on the outside but depraved on the inside. Moreover, he puts him away as intellectually inferior and superficial. Several things in Sebastian's text may indicate that it is based on Oscar Wilde's life story. For this, we look, among other things and most importantly, to the fact that Oscar Wilde lived in Paris under the pseudonym 'Sebastian Melmoth', after a character in a book by his great-uncle: Melmoth The Wanderer, by Charles Maturin. In addition, it is thus clear than Wilde was in bad shape in Paris ('the candle is burning so low for me') and French words are also used in the text: cherie and courtesan, as well as 'Parisian' itself. It is likely that Sebastian was written from Oscar Wilde's point of view towards Lord Alfred Douglas. Other references, by no means all, could be: Wilde was a poet ('work out a rhyme'), homosexuality ('you oh so gay' and 'Bowery Saloon'), Wilde's abhorrence of Lord Alfred Douglas's view of the world ('your view of society screws up my mind') and Lord Alfred Douglas's appearance ('pale angel face').
