Tycho Brahe and the Restoration of Astronomy Dr Emma Perkins Talk recorded Fri 3rd October 2025, Queen Square, Bath From his island observatory, generously funded by the Danish crown, Tycho Brahe (1546–1601) carried out a systematic programme of astronomical observation that laid crucial foundations for the scientific transformations of the 16th and 17th centuries. Yet despite his empirical precision—strikingly modern in spirit—Tycho’s ambition was deeply rooted in the past: he sought nothing less than the restoration of ancient astronomy. His work drew on classical models even as it reshaped the discipline through new methods, instruments, and debates. Join us for an exploration of how Tycho’s engagement with antiquity informed his scientific practice, and how his legacy continues to influence our understanding of the cosmos. Speaker: Dr Emma Perkins, University of Cambridge Dr Emma Perkins is a Teaching Associate in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science and a Fellow of Newnham College, University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on early modern astronomy, with particular interest in visual and material culture and systems of patronage. 👉 For more talks in the Renaissance: Journeys of Discovery series, subscribe to the BRLSI channel and turn on notifications.
