This is my favorite waltz, and apparently, it was also Chopin's favorite. It is a stark contrast to the typical fun and upbeat waltz that was expected at that time, and from Chopin's previous two waltzes, which are virtuosic pieces meant to impress the audience. This is a melancolique waltz that Chopin wrote from the heart. That is probably why he loved this piece so much, because he was being honest and expressing his emotions. I've been wanting to play this piece for a long time, but despite being slow and not too technically challenging, I always felt this was far beyond my skills. It probably still is, but I thought this would be a good time to learn it. I was practicing left-hand cantabile melody with Chopin's prelude No.6 and it was a nice preparation for this Waltz. And this piece is a nice "preparation" for the Etude Op.25 No.7, which I am tempted to learn now. For this recording, I wanted to simulate a performance setting, so made a commitment to use the very first take, completely unedited. It turned out ok, with just a few mistakes, but with the musical intention that I wanted. I tried to give a bit of a contrast in the repetitions of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th motifs. The first time, I did it slower, more melodic and darker, and the second time, a bit faster, more articulated and brighter. I think this makes sense considering the bridge to the 5th part, with the melody running in the left-hand and the modulation to a Major key. Anyway, as always I am happy to hear your feedback and answer any questions on the comments.
