Top 5 Giallo Films for an Introduction to the Genre List

This list was made for people who may be curious to get started in this forgotten genre of film. This list does NOT reflect what I think are the best gialli or even my favorites, but from a history of cinema perspective these films best shaped the genre. "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" is considered the first film to lean into the tropes which would become definitive staples of the soon-to-be genre in less that 10 years; it is the first photo-giallo, or early giallo. "Blood and Black Lace" came out years later and by the same director. This movie leans more into the slasher tropes that would become hallmarks of the genre. Keep in mind the first "early slashers" were in 1960, and in this same decade we got Splatter films which were focused on gore effects but were not necessarily "slashers", and that the giallo genre of the 1970s would predate the slasher genre by about 10 years. "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" released in 1970 became a cult success and spawned hundreds of imitations in Italy and Spain mostly, released between 1970-75. The perfect melding of mystery and crime with eroticism and violence, and occasional psychological elements became giallo. The genre would lose steam around 1975 but dozens were still being made each year. "Bay of Blood" came out the next year and had some amazing graphically violent kills. In many ways this film is the first slasher in regards to numerous and disturbing kills happening to a group of horny teenagers. No survivor girl in this one though. However, two kills are completely stolen from this movie and appear in "Friday the 13th: Part 1" and "Friday the 13th: Part 2". "Torso" is one of the most engaging and entertaining giallo films. This came out in the middle of the Golden Age of Giallo films where numerous titles were being released every month. This one features plenty of nudity and erotic scenes, an entire town full of red herrings, and one of the greatest soundtracks in the genre. "Deep Red" of course makes an appearance. This movie is usually on the #1 spot on Best Giallo Films lists and it's easy to see why. Dario Argento started the genre in 1970, and effectively killed it with the extreme success of this movie. Maybe it's just a coincidence that the genre started fizzling out after its release. This was my first giallo movie and I highly recommend it, but probably not as your first one. I struggled for years to find another movie that was as good consistently throughout. Great reveal. Great characters. Great soundtrack. Great writing. And great directing.
