If you were searching for the AUTHENTIC Afghan "Kabuli" pulao in Peshawar - STOP LOOKING! After months of trying every Kabuli Rice joint claiming to be the real deal, I finally stumbled across these amazing Afghans from Mazar-i-Sharif who run a lesser known restaurant inside one of the streets in the Qissa Khwani Bazaar. Their food is heavenly! Jointly run by Dari-speaking Afghans of Turkmen/ Tajik origin the main speciality is good ol' Kabuli Pulao served with chunks of juicy meat. Side orders such as grilled Afghan tikka, spinach, qeema, beans served with local bread are also available ("Yak Khorak" combo) The only downside is that the serving area in the restaurant isn't too family-friendly and is meant for men. I was told they can serve food to families in the serai (inn) next door but I wouldn't recommend that. The meal is best enjoyed on the spot, fresh out of the two large purpose-built daigs (Cauldrons). They both measure 4 feet in diameter and were specially brought from Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan in 1990.
