Jimmy Jazz by The Clash performed at The Snug in Atherton, March 2024 by Death or Glory Tribute to The Clash. Go to clashtributeband.com for bookings and more. Joe Strummer said the opening lines for Jimmy Jazz came to him like the opening scene in a movie. How the remaining lyrics were crafted can be left to legend, but always one to push boundaries - Joe loved to improvise and let the music take him where he needed to go. With the tape rolling, Joe did what he does best, and gave us the gift of a hauntingly beautiful outro to Jimmy Jazz. In his book “Route 19 Revisited,” Marcus Gray said that placing Jimmy Jazz third on London Calling was the band “throwing down the gauntlet to those who didn’t expect or want to hear The Clash play anything other than parole punk.” Well, it did just that. Whilst there’s a disjointed feel to this song, the musicianship is anything but. Topper is his usual incredible self on the original, and Paul’s walking bassline compliments it perfectly, conveying the Count Basie swing-jazz feel the band sought when recruiting their new horn section "The Irish Horns" of Dick Hanson, Ray Beavis, Chris Gower & John Earle. Arguably the most unique song on the album, Jimmy Jazz baffled critics when The Clash debuted it live in London in July 1979 - a mere 5 months before the album was released. They followed this up by opening their second show of the Take the 5th tour in Chicago two months later. Again, critics responded with mixed reviews. Undeterred, sound engineer Bill Price called Joe during the tour and suggested mixing the track to sound like it was recorded after hours in a dive bar. Discussions were had and plans were put into motion. The clinking glasses were overdubbed during production, the introductory whistle was recorded - and a masterpiece was complete. It’s a song we as a band have only played live 4 times to date, each time close to the end of our set. It’s one we are buzzing to be bringing back for the London Calling shows and if The Clash can open with it, then we can certainly play it at No.3. The outro is one for the purists but thankfully we have the rhythm section to pull it off. Here we are debuting it at our sold out show at The Snug in Atherton back in March, fulfilling a request from venue barman and longtime friend of the band Matt Dickinson. Video for this show was sadly limited but thanks to the house engineer Ben Morgan, we were left with a great multitrack sound recording that we then mixed ourselves. We had to share it, and we hope you enjoy it!
