The International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) Young Professionals Forum, in conjunction with South African National Committee on Large Dams (SANCOLD), hosted this webinar on 20 February 2026, presenting the successful raising of Hazelmere Dam. Hazelmere Dam is located on the Mdloti River in KwaZulu-Natal. Originally constructed in 1976 to supply irrigation and domestic water, the dam remains a key water-supply asset for the North Coast region. The recent project raised the dam by 7 m, increasing its storage capacity from 23.9 million m³ to 43.6 million m³, thereby strengthening water security for the rapidly growing region. In this webinar, the project team presents an overview of the Hazelmere Dam Raising project, highlighting key design and construction aspects. Particular attention is given to the use of ground anchors as an enhanced stability measure implemented during the raising works. Speakers Duane Booyse, Pr Eng – Chief Operating Officer, Ingérop South Africa Devon Mothersille, PhD, CEng – Managing Director, Geoserve Global Ltd and Single Bore Multiple Anchor Ltd This session offers valuable insights from the project experts and reflects the mission of the ICOLD Young Professionals Forum to share knowledge, promote technical exchange, and connect the global community of young professionals in dam engineering.
