Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, occupies a Himalayan valley at 2,334 meters. In 1955 the government declared it the summer seat, and in 1961 it replaced Punakha as permanent capital. The city spanned 1.2 square kilometers by 1960. By 2020 the population had grown to 100,000, about 15% of Bhutan’s residents. In 1986 electricity arrived, and in 1999 television debuted. Telecom expanded when mobile services launched in 2004, reaching over 80% coverage. The economy centers on government services and private firms. National Bank branches have operated since 1982, supporting trade and development. Merchant banking licenses granted in 1990 diversified financial services and credit for small businesses. Bhutan’s first modern high school opened in 1961, and the national university in 1983. The health system developed after Thimphu Hospital opened in 1974. Road links in the 1970s connected Thimphu to districts, easing travel. In 2008 Bhutan became a constitutional monarchy, and Thimphu the seat of parliament. Tourism began in 1974 with 241 visitors. By early 2012 arrivals reached 1,000 annually. The government increased visitor cap to 5,000 by 2015, and by 2020 tourism contributed around 1.5% of national GDP. Since 1972, urban planning has balanced growth with cultural preservation under Gross National Happiness.
