It connects Beaufort (Beaufortain valley) with Bourg-Saint-Maurice (Tarentaise valley). The pass is known for its scenic beauty, the nearby Roselend dam and lake, and its frequent inclusion in the Tour de France cycling race. The Cormet de Roselend reaches an elevation of 1,968 meters (6,457 ft) above sea level. It is situated in the Beaufortain massif, a part of the French Alps. The pass offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the Mont Blanc massif. The Roselend dam (Barrage de Roselend) and its associated lake (Lac de Roselend) are prominent features of the landscape near the pass. Historically, the Cormet de Roselend was a local passage used by shepherds and traders. The construction of the Roselend dam in the 1950s significantly altered the landscape and accessibility of the area. The dam's construction submerged the old village of Roselend, leaving only the chapel of Saint-Grat visible when the water level is low. The pass is traversed by the D902 road, a paved mountain road that is generally open during the summer months. The road is known for its winding sections and steep gradients, making it a popular route for cyclists and motorcyclists. During the winter, the pass is typically closed due to heavy snowfall.
