西明寺は、滋賀県犬上郡にある天台宗の寺院。琵琶湖の東、鈴鹿山脈の西山腹に位置し、金剛輪寺、百済寺とともに「湖東三山」の1つに数えられる名刹です。西明寺の境内は、紅葉の名所として有名です。 寺伝によれば平安時代初期に伝説の修験者である三修上人が創建。承和3年（836年）三修に帰依していた仁明天皇により寺領が寄進され、諸堂が建築されたと伝わります。現存する国宝の本堂と三重塔は鎌倉時代の建築で、当時はかなりの規模を有していたと思われます。 元亀2年（1571年）、織田信長の延暦寺の焼き討ちの際、比叡山傘下の西明寺も焼き討ちにあってしまいます。しかし、幸いにも本堂や三重塔は焼失をまぬがれました。その後、一時西明寺は荒廃するが江戸時代に入り、天海や望月友閑らによって再興されます。さらに将軍徳川家光の庇護を受けるなど徐々に復興し今日に至っています。 令和2年（2020年）、本堂の西柱と南柱に菩薩立像が4体ずつ描かれていたことが赤外線調査で判明。絵は飛鳥時代に描かれたもので、仏教絵画として日本最古級にあたるものでした。この柱絵の存在により、寺の創建時期が伝承より大きくさかのぼる可能性がありそうです。 天台宗／国宝／国の名勝／滋賀県犬上郡 ____________________________________________________ Saimyoji Temple is a temple of the Tendai sect located in Inukami-gun, Shiga prefecture. In 2020, an infrared survey revealed that four standing bodhisattvas were painted on the west and south pillars of the main hall. The paintings were made during the Asuka period (710-794), and are among the oldest Buddhist paintings in Japan. The existence of these paintings on the pillars may indicate that the temple's foundation date may be much later than tradition has it.
